We did our first day sail to a destination this weekend on the new boat. Our neightbors in the marina infomed us that this was a fun day trip - go for ice cream in Bainbridge. This sounded like a lot of fun, so with my parents in town we headed off in search of some wind to get us across the sound. We really were…
(I say this alot in my day-to-day, thought it was a fun name for a boat)
We did some research before we left, there is a city doc in Bainbridge that only charged 10 cents per foot of boat length for 3 hours. We had sailed to Bainbrige before, but had never gone as far as going into Eagle harbor so this was a new experience for us. All in, it was an easy sail and when we arrived at the city doc, there was a spot open that seemed perfect for us. We docked up no problem and after spending quite a bit of time trying to figure out how to tie to the bull rail (we had not docked somewhere without cleats before) we felt happy with our overengineered solution (bowlines on each line), we headed ashore for ice cream. Sounds like the better option is to use a round turn and two half hitches (on a bite if the line is long) - we will try that next time.
We took a quick walk through the park and we made it to ice cream! Afterwords we headed back to the city playground so Sara could have some play time. Sara had a great time and made a new friend. She helped her on the jungle gym - it was very cute!
We headed home to a beautiful view of the city. We made great time, until about a mile out when the wind died down to 4 knots or so. The wind was calm by the time we made it to the marina and docking was a cinch. Hopefully the practice on the calm days will make for an easy go of it on the windier ones…
