Summary

We had a rainy weekend ahead of us, but having not been on many adventures as of late, we opted to go exploring. I read about an abandoned mining town (ghost town) in the north cascades called “Monte Cristo”. We ended up leaving home late and it was a 2 hour drive to get there, but we decided to push on and brought along some lights!

It was raining a little when we started our hike at about 4p. It was a 2 hour drive to get here and we had to make a few stops on the way. The trail was quite nice, wide and flat, which meant we could hold hands which Sara loves.

About 3 miles in (the hike was 4 miles out and 4 back), the rain really hit. We were soaked! We both put on our raincoats/hoods a little bit late, but not sure it mattered much. We were both warm enough though, so we continued. We made it to a slippery log bridge where we had to crawl across on our hands and knees to make sure we didn’t slip and fall into the stream.

After a very wet mile, we made it to the first of the towns little cabins. This one was in tremendous disrepair and I got a bit worried that the whole town would be like this.

Made It

Our priority however was finding shelter, however, so we could grab a snack out of the rain before we head back. We continued on for another half mile or so before we found this small cabin a little bit deeper into the woods. The cabin was locked (based on how a lot of the town looked, it seems like there is a lot of vandalism here), but there was a small patio that was reasonably dry. We laid out our snacks on a small table and ate up (and warmed up) before we were off to finish up the trip.

As we were leaving the cabin, we found a field of these small mushrooms - they were really pretty and they made these small cups that held almost a pint of water in some cases.

Mushrooms

The 4 mile trip back continued to rain, but not as violently as it did right before we made it to the town. Unfortunately, it started to cool off significantly as the sun set. We made it back to the slippery log bridge, and crawled back across using our little lantern.

Crawling At Night

We got back to the car around 7p - several hours after sunset. I turned the heat up to full and we headed back into town to get Mexican food! We were originally planning to camp out tonight, but given how wet/cold we were, we decided to head home and “Camp” in the basement - on the bed. :)
