We made a last minute decision to head to Ft Flagler this weekend (near port townsend). The origional plan was to head to Mt St Helens but the forecast was for lots of wind and rain, so we decided to change it up a bit. There is a drive-in movie theater that we were going to try and Ft Flagler an old historic fort with lots of trails and places to explore.
We left on Saturday morning and headed over to the Peninsula. After our normal grocery run, we headed to the campsite to claim a place for us. The site we found was right next to the ring trail that went around the park and took us to all of the historical monuments.
Sara wanted to walk Oakey for a bit…
Then she decided she needed to collect some “Maps” to help us make sure we were going the right way…
But once we got to the bunkers/batteries (Ft Flagler was a 1911 artillery battery to protect the entrance to the Puget Sound), Sara lit up and wanted to explore. She basically ran to every building as soon as we saw it and wanted to go into every room.
And just some more hiking pictures…
As we neared the end of the hike, Sara had a revelation…
The trail went along a bluff facing the water for the first half, which made for some amazing views. The weather was cold, but very clear, which left me hopefull that we weren’t going to get rain. Boy were we wring, but more on that later.
After our hike, we headed back to camp and did a bit of work on organizin the van (making the bed with new sheets/etc). I always forget to take a picture of the campsite at day time, but I remembered this time… We were up on a hill slightly and had a great view of the rest of the campground.
Sara christened the area and scared off all the “bears” with her ice powers. Don’t know what we would do without that.
We setup camp and had a big(ish) lunch and were planning to go to the playground/hang out until it was time for the movie, but the rain really started to pickup and we were forced to shelter in the van. As the rain continued to pickup, I realized that a movie was probably not in the cards (watching a drive in movie through windshield wipers sounded like no fun) so we headed off to find something else fun to do.
Randomly, we found this brewery with some live music. Sara was enthraled…
There was a group of women in their 60s and they were all a couple of drinks in. One of the women was fascinated with Sara and kept asking her to dance (which Sara wanted none of) but as we were leaving, the group gave Sara a standing ovation - unclear why (other than the drinks) but Sara is now a minor celebrity in the town now. :)
We had a fire later that evening despite the rain.
We cooked up the rest of a steak we ate earlier on the fire. Neither of us were hungry so I decided to make it a treat for Oakley.
The next morning, we packed up camp and started our drive home. There was a beach in the park and a little playground so we took a quick stop to get our wiggles out before the long drive.
Despite being right next to the playground, the spite that headed out into the ocean looked barren and wild - fun little hike before heading back to civilization.
